![]() ![]() Now in less than three years, I've had to change carrier integration twice. I had carrier integration with Google Voice with Sprint for nearly eight years from Juntil May 2018, when they killed the service. (I really missed the official Google voice widget once I switched from Google Voice to Google Hangouts when Sprint ended their carrier integration with Google, forcing me to port my number to Google Fi to keep carrier integration. Maybe someday, Google with develop a Chrome Extension for Google Messages, but I wouldn't hold my breath, because the entire time I was using Hangouts, I had to use an unofficial widget for Google Hangouts. I couldn't do that when I was using Google Hangouts or Google Voice. (Although, for some reason, it understands if I ask it to make a call with Google Duo.) If I'm in the car, and I get a text message, I can have the car read aloud and reply to my text messages. I've really wanted that for a long time, because the Google Assistant didn't understand, "Hey Google, use Google Hangouts to send a text message to.". This allows all apps that send you text and OTA (over-the-air) messages for verification to work automatically instead of having to manually turn carrier integration off and then back on each time you need to use them, and "Hey, Google, send a text message to." works natively. Now, your phone's native stock text messaging app is the same app for your carrier integration, which, if you've been using Google Voice with carrier integration and subsequently Google Hangouts with carrier integration like I have, you haven't enjoyed for over a decade. It just opens a link, pretty lame I know. The unofficial extension doesn't tell you if you have a new message or when someone's calling or let you send or receive texts from the extension: nothing. ![]() There is an unofficial extension, but it does nothing other than opening /web in a new window, which is useless if you already have it only your bookmarks bar. Sadly, unlike Google Voice & Google Hangouts, there's no official Chrome extension for Google Messages. Do you use Old Hangouts Chrome Extension I use this I use something else. The width of the non-transparent UI window can be resized into a relatively narrow column, but there is no way to get the Hangouts Chrome App's conversation bubbles.U/tankerkiller125real is right, u/Robodude, and is where you can see Google's official YouTube video showing how it works. Revert back to the old hangouts extension. The primary difference between the Hangouts App and Hangouts Extension functionality is that the Hangouts Extension doesn't have a "Transparent UI" option or conversation bubbles.
